Javier Cayarga Izaguirre of Cayarga SA de CV Constructora with Ocean’s Luis Pena

Javier Cayarga Izaguirre is an Architect who loves the construction and structural steel industry so much that he decided to get fully involved. And this is how he is going about it. Brand new building, two long parallel 200 ft. bays, with cranes soon to be installed. And to do the work efficiently, he ordered a new Avenger to do the laying out and drilling of holes, directly from the Tekla detail drawings. This my friends is the right way to get into the game!

We were fortunate to be on site when the truck bearing the new Avenger pulled into his new fab shop, and Javier watched like an expectant father as the machine was being unloaded from the truck. I have the feeling that this is going to be in an interesting story to watch unfold.

CUSTOMER SPOTLIGHT: Industrias Metalicas Caribe, SRL

It is always so gratifying to see the success of our customers. One of our more unusual customers is Industrias Metalicas Caribe, SRL, known as Indumeca, who is based in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Indumeca started out life as a manufacturer of propane and natural-gas cylinders, but in a very short time has become one of the top structural steel fabricators in the Caribbean Islands.

Indumeca – one of the top structural steel fabricators in the Caribbean Islands

After the acquisition of multiple Ocean products, including two Avenger 40 drill lines, a Clipper angle line, a Liberator beam coper and a Terminator band saw, Indumeca has seen their fabricated output tonnage increase by more than ten time in less than two years.

With the Ocean equipment, they still have the capacity to double their current tonnage, and are aiming to become the top structural steel fabricator in the Caribbean islands.

Ing. Enrique Ureña, founder and owner of Indumeca, explains how the purchase of the two Ocean Avengers allowed them to allocate all their plates and other profiles on one Avenger, and all their beams and columns to the other Avenger. Moreover the machines have never let him down. The trend in the Caribbean islands is to move away from anything other than drilled holes.  >>Watch Video Below

Peddinghaus and Ocean rebuild Christchurch

The 22nd of Feb 2011 was a terrifying day in Christchurch New Zealand. A magnitude 6.3 earthquake decimated the city, killing 185 people and destroying over 170,000 buildings.

Following the earthquake, and eleven months of more than four hundred 4.5 magnitude and higher aftershocks, the former picturesque city of Christchurch was no more. Most of the buildings in the city center collapsed, and those that remained standing had to be condemned.

And so a long hard project of rebuilding from the ruins was put into play. Steel Construction New Zealand, (SCNZ) the governing body of the steel industry, set about revising their building code, and steel became the building material of choice for the rebirth of Christchurch.

Through the hard work of our great partner, Impact Machinery, both Ocean Machinery and Peddinghaus set about installing the massive fabricating capacity that would be needed throughout the island, and in so doing, we have been instrumental in seeing the skyline of New Zealand change in front of our eyes.

New World Record for Ocean Avenger

South African customer, Greenhouse Construction, set a new record by drilling over 4 Million holes with their Ocean Avenger in just 2 years and 2 months since installation. As one of the premier design build companies doing large warehouses, Greenhouse completely redesigned all aspects of their warehouses to best utilize the capability of the Avenger.

In two years they have gone from predominantly welding their structures to now being an almost completely bolted design, netting them considerable savings in the process. In South Africa, steel service centers that offer processing, sell a hole for around R15.00. This means that Greenhouse has seen a return in the range of R60 Million* in 2 years on a machine that cost them less than R2.6M*. Now that’s what you call a return on investment!  (*$4.8M return on $200K invested)

Making Waves: Avenger CNC Beam Drill Line Increases Productivity for Marfin Estruturas Metálicas in Brazil

We recently traveled to Brazil, where we were able to visit one of our valued Ocean Avenger customers Jairo Costa, of Marfin Estruturas Metálicas in São Paulo.

We were amazed to find that the machine and operating console were cleaner than when the machine shipped over two years ago! The Avenger CNC Beam Drill Line has had such a positive effect on the company that the operator, Jonas Barbosa dos Santos, takes great pride in keeping it well-maintained.

The Avenger CNC Beam Drill operator Jonas showing off how clean his console is after two years!

On the day of our visit, the MDL screen showed that they have used the Avenger CNC Beam Drill Line to drill and layout more than 448,000 holes / layout marks in just two years. In Brazil the typical allowance for the cost of a hole is R3.00 Reais (around $1.50 USD). This means that the machine has contributed over $330,000 to the customer in two years!

The operating screen shows the total number of holes drilled by the Ocean Avenger CNC Beam Drill Line

When Marfin purchased the Avenger two years ago, it was apparent the machine would give a significant return on the investment. It was a 110-person company and since getting the Avenger CNC Beam Drill Line, they have reduced the headcount to 80 employees, significantly reducing labor costs.

During our visit, Jairo was awarded one of the only four Ocean Commodores Jackets in existence, for his contribution to the 2014 Ocean Dealer Meeting in Brazil. These jackets are awarded to customers to have made an appreciable contribution to Ocean Machinery over the years.

Jairo standing proudly by the Ocean Avenger CNC beam drill line for structural steel

One of the most gratifying things we can receive from a customer is an endorsement for our machines, and we thank Jonas of Marfin for taking the time to personally write a handwritten letter about the Ocean Avenger CNC Beam Drill! Read the English version here, and scroll down to see the actual letter below.

“The Avenger CNC Beam Drill Line is a machine capable of drilling and putting layout marks in different types of profiles, such as: beams, angles, plates and tubes, in less time and increases productivity when compared to the method we used before: manually putting layout marks, punching, drilling first and second passes using a mag drill, which is a dangerous equipment to work with.

On the subject of enhanced productivity, the Avenger CNC Beam Drill Line stands out not only for its simplicity to operate, but also for the safety of the operator, maintenance personnel and shop supervisors.

The safety is a great selling point for this machine. The Avenger CNC Beam Drill Line will not start a cycle if there are any mistakes in the program, and will sound an alarm on the panel. For example, if there would be any sort of collision between the axis. It also has 4 emergency stop buttons strategically located and an anti-collision system that stops the machine when activated.

Programming can be done directly on the panel or in a computer in the office, in which case the files are transferred through a USB drive or network cable. It’s also possible to make adjustments to the part programs.

The Avenger is without a doubt the machine that modernized our company and consequently kept the company alive in the market.

Its strong point are:

    • Easy to program and operate
    • Improved speed and cost effectiveness
    • Diminishes the chances of errors in the drilling operation
    • Increases the productivity
    • Safety in operation

A quick tip to users: to keep the machine running perfectly, always check the hydraulic and lubricant oil levels, and don’t forget to lubricate the axis.”

– Jonas Barbosa dos Santos – Avenger operator Marfin Estruturas Metálicas, Piracicaba/SP – Brazil Written on May 29th 2014.

The Ocean Avenger Does Much More Than Just Drill Beams

Often people assume that a beam drill line solely serves the purpose of drilling beams. With the Ocean Avenger, this could not be further from the truth. The versatile Ocean Avenger can drill holes in beams, columns, channel, flat bar, angle, rail, round and square tube and much more. We are often amazed when we see what some of our Avenger customers are doing with their machines.

We recently visited an Avenger Client, Specialty Machine Works in Penticton, British Columbia with the area Sales Rep from Akhurst Machinery. Specialty Machine works is primarily an industrial fabricator specializing in material handling and conveying systems for oil and gas exploration, saw mill and logging, minerals mining and refuse conveying and storage. They also fabricate commercial buildings and pedestrian bridges. They are able to drill many different parts using their Ocean Avenger, not just beams.

We toured the shop and the owner pointed out all of the various profiles drilled with his Avenger. The pictures show various conveying components being fabricated for a large pellet mill. He was able to drill most all components requiring holes or layout marks using the Avenger Drill.
